Arcane Brilliance: How long will my gear last me?
Each week, Arcane Brilliance emerges from the sewers beneath Dalaran, weary from dueling (and winning!) over and over in the Circle of Wills, to deliver to you a column about Mages. What’s that you say? What good are sewers in a floating city? Where does all the sewage go? Does the city drift over the countryside, forever trailing a series of sewage waterfalls? Ah, but you forget: Dalaran is a city of Mages! Even our poo is magical.
After reading our own Adam Holisky’s excellent post on upgrading tanking shields in Wrath, I decided I wanted to know how long my Mage’s gear would last in the frozen north. It’s a fair question, and I suspect a common concern. We’ve worked hard for our shiny epics–either by raiding like crazy or grinding for honor or Arena points, and often a bit of both–and the thought of leaving them behind in one of the expansion’s first zones for some green quality item that drops off a random mob is a little bit depressing.
We want to feel–in these last

Addon Spotlight: Mac Dual-boxing 1
The new Recruit-A-Friend program has taken the World of Warcraft community by storm, perhaps more so in the dual- and multi-boxing circles. I’ll admit that while I advocate enjoying the leveling process and experiencing the lore through quests and in-game events, once you’ve hit 70 a couple of times, the magic tends to wane. With the coming of Wrath of the Lich King, we’ve had some time to re-evaluate our WoW experience. For many of us, finishing up some alts has become a way to prepare for the expansion. I’ve had a number of alts since I started playing, but have only managed to ding two paladins and a rogue. Each time I play in a battleground I see a member of another class do something crazy cool and ponder rolling whatever class it is.
With the RAF program in full effect, I decided that dual-boxing with the 300% XP and Summon Friend ability would be the most efficient way to get my alts Wrath-ready. This How-To is specifically for players using Macs, but in essence many of the principles remain true for PC

Where are you heading once Wrath hits?
In an earlier post I spent some time wondering if it might be a good idea to level a Shaman alongside the new fleet of Death Knights guaranteed to appear once Wrath hits. A lot of commenters were of the opinion (correct, I think) that the desire to avoid hugely crowded areas is probably better served by leveling an alt to 58-60 and sticking it in Outland. The alt can then await the surge of Death Knights who decide to continue leveling, and who should have some experience with its playstyle by then. While I’m still most likely to level my main to 80 once the expansion hits, having an alt in a less crowded area of the game is pretty appealing. For all I know, the Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord will be packed to the scuppers too. I play on a laptop with a wireless connection, so my gameplay tends to suffer badly when the area I’m in resembles Los Angeles during rush hour. Avoiding overcrowded areas is no small thing.
My realm’s considered medium population, but we’ve still got enough people that, if even 10% of the

Leveling with empty pockets
For the first 10 levels, players with higher level main characters will likely be mailing their new alt cash to help them gear up early and purchase additional bags. For new players, or those starting characters on new servers or as a cross-faction, I recommend you learn two gathering professions as early as possible; Herbalism and Mining.
As you adventure and quest outside your initial starting area, you will come across many mining nodes and herbs that can be gathered. These can sell on the Auction House very well for your level, netting you anywhere from 10 silver to 1 gold per stack of 20 Peacebloom, Silverleaf or Copper Ore, depending on the economy of your server. Please take advantage of this to help you earn the money you will need to train, equip better gear, and purchase bags, potions and other consumables. There will be plenty of time to drop one or both of these professions when you reach level 20 or even 30, if you desire to pick up a crafting profession. And don’t forget, if you are a Tauren Druid, you start out with a +15 to your

Naxx-10 loot discovered
The ten-man version of Naxxramas was enabled in last night’s beta patch, including loot. And thanks to insomniac beta testers and to MMO-Champion, we now get to see a whole bunch of that loot, including class sets, which is what I’m most interested in at the moment. The class sets aren’t quite finished yet ¨C their names are things like “Naxxramas 10 Rogue Set,” and there aren’t any set bonuses ¨C but it’s still interesting to see what sort of stats Blizz is planning on giving us.
Some observations:
* The item level on all this stuff is 200; Kil’jaeden’s drops are ilvl 164.
* Given that two tiers are typically about 14 ilvls apart, this implies that when we see Naxx-25 loot it will probably be ilvl 214 or so.
* I know that we’ve got spell power now, and no +healing, but it still took me a few minutes to figure out why I couldn’t find a healing weapon.
* Melee one-handed weapons are doing 143 DPS; by comparison, Hand of the Deceiver, from Kil’jaeden, does 114 (the highest

Glory hounds
Of course, with every Achievement, there’s the potential for glory hounds to pursue their own personal stats, sometimes to the detriment of the game. This is unavoidable. Even then, it will be interesting to see a new dynamic of players actually pursuing game objectives, with player kills as a side dish. There are numerous PvP objectives to unlock, and the Battlegrounds Achievements are a mere fraction of the Achievements available to players. PvP is guaranteed to be different in Wrath of the Lich King, not just in mechanics but behavioral approach.
If players are conscious of Achievements, it gives them an additional goal beyond the basic objective of the Battleground. It adds flavor and focus, and we’ll likely see more players crowding the flags in Arathi Basin. We might even see more Alterac Valley games where towers are hotly contested rather than merely given up like the Russians’ scorched earth policy against Napoleon. Battlegrounds PvP just might become truly interesting again. In my next column, we’ll take a look at the Achievements

Taking a look at Runeforging
Death Knights certainly feel like a Hero class in every sense of the word. Aside from their impressive abilities, they also have a brand new resource system called Runes and Runic Power. These coupled with the fact that they jumpstart to Level 55 ensure that Death Knights feel epic. They are also unique in that they have a special bond with their weapon, called Runeweapons, and Blizzard wanted to give them a different mechanic here, too.
Death Knights have a class-specific profession called Runeforging, similar to the Rogue-specific Poisons and to a lesser degree, Lockpicking. However, unlike Rogue poisons, Runeforging a weapon supercedes weapon enchantments. Inscribing Runes onto the Death Knight’s weapon also requires a Rune Forge, kind of like a Moonwell for making Mooncloth or a Forge for smelting metals. Currently, Rune Forges can only be found in Ebon Hold, the Death Knights’ exclusive clubhouse.
There are currently six runes available for Death Knights to inscribe into their weapons — Rune of Cinderglacier, Rune of

ATLANTICA ONLINE Q&A – WarCry Network
WarCry: Introduce yourselves and tell us a bit about your experiences in MMO or general game development.
My name is Kim Tae Gon and I am the executive producer of Atlantica for NDOORS, based in Seoul, Korea. I’ve worked on computer games development for about 15 years. The last seven years have been with NDOORS, creating MMOGs like Luminary: Rise of the GoonZu. From games like that one, we were able to devise Atlantica’s guild and town management systems.
WC: When was the decision made to bring Atlantica to North America? What made you feel that it would be successful here?
In its development, we knew we wanted to bring the game to North America, as well as to other parts of the world. Our goal was to produce a game that would be appealing to people all over the world and not be limited to Asia. We think it will be successful beyond Asia because the turn-based combat and mercenary features help the game stand out among MMORPGs, since these are not the norm. Plus, Atlantica takes players on a chase all over the world.

World of Warcraft: The Jormungar
The World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King bestiary has been updated with a description and screenshot of the Jormungar. See what we’re talking about:
JORMUNGAR
The fiercely aggressive jormungar are a marvel of evolution, possessing rows of chisel-like teeth capable of boring through solid rock, as well as muscular, flattened bodies well adapted to rapid underground navigation.
Legends tell of the nerubians’ using the jormungar as creatures of labor, forcing them to carve massive tunnels through Northrend’s subterranean ice and lay the groundwork for the nerubians’ ancient civilization. With the fall of the nerubian empire, swarms of rogue jormungar ran amok, drilling through the region’s permafrost, attacking surface dwellers, and devouring everything in their path.
